‘Le fermier dans son pré’ is the French translation of the popular children’s song ‘The farmer in the dell’. It is also a party game and a great way to teach pre-schoolers or kindergardeners about farms.

Party Game

This game needs at least 12 children. Each round of the game last for as long as it takes for the song to be sung – about 5 minutes/round.

  1. Select a child to be the first FARMER. The children make a circle and dance around the FARMER, who is in the middle of the circle.
  2. When the song says: ‘the farmer takes a wife’, the FARMER picks someone from the circle to join him in the middle. In the next verse, the WIFE picks a CHILD. As the song progresses, the CHILD picks a NURSE, the NURSE picks a CAT, and so forth.
  3. In the final verse, everybody goes back to the circle while miming eating the CHEESE.
  4. The CHEESE stays in the middle as he or she will become the next FARMER.
