Food bank’s Christmas appeal gets under way this Friday with corporate volunteers lending a hand to pack 2000 hampers at the charity’s Welshpool distribution centre.

In its third year, the annual Give a Feed appeal is supported by the Rotary Club of Heirisson. The campaign raises funds to purchase enough food to feed two thousand WA families.

Each hamper is packed with festive foods as well healthy staples including pasta, rice and canned vegetables.

Foodbank CEO Greg Hebble said the hamper campaign was important as it eased the burden and hardship experienced by thousands of families.

“The festive season is a time when people affected by poverty feel the isolation that comes from not being able to join in the celebrations many of us take for granted,” Mr. Hebble said. “It is terribly sad that hard working people are struggling to make ends meet.”

“So many people need assistance. Almost three quarters of the people who receive food from Foodbank are considered ‘working poor’.”

The charity is under increasing pressure to meet growing demand.

“Since July our volumes have grown by 10% and demand continues to grow.”

“We now provide food for 51,000 Western Australians every month.

“I urge people to imagine how awful it must be to be unable to provide a meal for your family at Christmas. Supporting the Give a Feed campaign really will make a difference to a family living in our community.”

On December12, Foodbank’s Christmas campaign will continue with a public food appeal in the City of Perth.

Hosted by Bankwest and Raine Square, Carry a Can is an opportunity for commuters and office workers to donate a can of food for families in need this festive season.

During the day volunteers from the Water Corporation will construct a sculpture from canned foods and lunch time crowds will be entertained by St. Pat’s Starlight Hotel Choir.

People wishing to assist struggling families this Christmas can visit www.giveafeed.com.au or hold their own food drive at work or school. More information is available at www.foodbankwa.org.au.
