NSW Health is reminding families across the State to take an important 24-hour health advice phone number with them while they’re away from home during the Christmas holidays.

NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant reminded parents and carers about the benefits of the healthdirect Australia helpline, which can be accessed by calling 1800 022 222.

“It can be very distressing for families when children get sick while travelling but by calling healthdirect Australia, parents can receive health advice from registered nurses on the line,” Dr Chant said.

“It is important to stress that people with a health emergency should still call Triple Zero (000), but for other health concerns healthdirect Australia is the number to call, at any time.”

Healthdirect Australia is already popular with NSW families while at home, but it can also be valuable when people need health advice while holidaying in unfamiliar areas.

All calls to healthdirect Australia are answered by registered nurses, who are supported by up-to-date computer-based clinical resources, as well as an electronic directory of local services and facilities.

Those requiring follow up treatment are advised where and when they can seek help.

Dr Chant said healthdirect Australia is an excellent service which reassures and supports families and allows them to get appropriate medical advice during the Christmas break.

“It is also a good opportunity remind people to pack their medications if travelling away over the holiday season,” Dr Chant said.

Calls to healthdirect Australia are free from landlines, but mobile phone charges may apply. Visit www.healthdirect.org.au for a range of online health information.
